Mix 014

A while back I had a little website with a goofy name (Ravegression.com). I had grand plans of turning it into some sort of DJmix blog regularly updated with material from my myself, my friends and selectors I admired. Obviously that has not been happening. So I decided to shut the thing down. I'm consolidating. It feels good. Less pressure... I will definitely be getting back to making mixes and the iTunes podcast will still work. All the old mixes have been moved over here (/djmixes). Still getting my bearings and knocking the dust off... But I have more than enough material to keep me busy for months. Lots of cool records coming out. Psyched to get back to it.

Mix 013: A few wobbles short of a rinse out

Bare with me while I get curmudgeonly for a post. Whats with the tail-spin that this "fidget-house" stuff has gone into? Fidget-House, as the kids seem to be calling it, takes cues from pre-millennial UK jungle, 2step and speed garage, basically all the stuff that Switch and his Dubsided co-horts spawned. 90% of it is just awful. The worst of it can be found in the Blogosphere, but have you heard the latest Dubsided releases (Switch's label)? Its like Nu-Jump-Up-Jungle! Anyone remember Joker Recordings and Urban Takeover? Ironically all those Dubsided records are totally sold out (I blame Diplo and Sinden!). Switch and the Dubsided camp produced some pretty amazing tunes in the past few years (Worry about it later rmx / Bump rmx), but the shelf-life and creativity of the recent stuff is a few wobbles short of rinse out. Just one man's opinion. Not trying to be a hater. The cream of the crop fidget can be found on Made to Play. Jessie Rose's label from Germany does a nice job of riding the fine line between disposable dance floor fodder and unique noteworthy tunes that are still a lot of fun. The last two releases by Oliver S are fantastic. There is a CD compilation / mix coming out this month on Made to Play aptly title "Paying Around." It should be a good listen. Potty Mouth Music from Chicago has also grabbed my attention. A lot of their releases channel Tuff Jam and are absolutely solid.

Must have been that Tim Sweeney set from last saturday. Tomorrow is a big night! After I get dinner at the Velvet Cantina in the mission I am off to Loaded at Rickshaw to see Sleazemore and Guns & Bombs. After that its over to Ruby Skye to review the Mstrkrft show for BigStereo. Then its off to Supper Club to catch Sleazemore (again) after hours at the Le Tigre / Mistress Barbara show. Cant wait. Come say hi.

Some good tunes from last year on this mix, as well as some new jams of the week from the blogs and stores. I had a crazy weekend here in SF. The lights down low 1 year party friday night was great. Met some awesome gals from NYC by the names of Lauren Flax and E Frank. Both played great sets. As usual the small world syndrome set in and they ended up knowing two good friends of mine, chris glancy and nick rhodes (who both happen to be excellent photographers/artist). Saturday night was a serious endeavor. Two parties at all night after hours spots. The first one featured Tim Sweeney of DFA fame and Twitch from Optimo. The track selection of both DJs was humbling to hear. A lot of old shit I didn't know. Probably made before I was born or when I was 3. I wish I got a regular dose of that kind of weird disco, italo and rare oldschool.

At around 3:30 I rolled out to the middle of no where in Hunters Point (kinda ghetto out there). We went down a dirt road, through a chain link fence and into a weird compound of half finished wharehouses and buildings. There where also big piles of dirt everywhere to add to the mystique. Once inside it was techno time. SF's finest put together one of the best undergrounds I have ever been to. The highlight for me was seeing my old co-worker and friend Justin Maxwell absolutely crush with his live performance. Justin makes fantastic music.

This week I also joined the BigStereo team and will be writing for them as well as going to SXSW with the gang. If you havent checked it out BigStereo is a great MP3 blog that drops at least a post a day (if not many more) which always include interesting new music. My first post is up now and its on an artist named Santogold. Santagold is amazing, so go check out the post! Im psyched to be part of that team. On to the mix...
